Careful with the awkward stuffThe roads onto Wedmore's ridge climb gently from the Levels, but the lanes between the villages are single-track in places with passing bays and ditches either side. A Luton van handles them fine with a driver who knows to plan the route — which is exactly what we do before the day, so the van arrives the right way round and sits where it can actually load.
Wedmore's older houses are solid Somerset stone — generous rooms, narrow doors, and staircases that were never designed with a king-size divan in mind. We wrap everything in blankets, take doors off hinges when they need to come off, dismantle beds and wardrobes where that's the sensible route, and put it all back together at the other end.
The Isle's smaller settlements — Blackford, Theale, Panborough, Mudgley — are all part of the same round for us, along with the moor villages toward Cheddar and Glastonbury. Village-to-village moves across the Levels are quick in miles but need the right vehicle handling; it's regular work, and it's priced on the same honest hourly clock as everything else.
