Moving in Wells: city-centre access and Mendip lanes

Wells combines compact city streets with rural addresses where the last half-mile matters more than the main route. Check both approaches before moving day.

Check the street and the final lane

For central Wells, look for permit bays, loading restrictions, pedestrian areas and the distance from the legal stopping place to the door. Send photos of the street, entrance and any tight staircase.

For Mendip villages, mention narrow lanes, low branches, weak verges, gates and limited turning space. If a Luton van cannot reach the property safely, agree the nearest workable loading point before the day.

Plan parking early

Move your own car before the booked arrival and speak to neighbours about shared access. A long carry is repeated for every box and item, so it can add more time than the drive between addresses.

If a bay suspension or permit is needed, use the current Somerset Council process and allow the stated lead time. Cones or bins do not legally reserve public parking.

Measure large furniture

Historic cottages and town houses may have narrow doors, low ceilings and sharp stair turns. Measure sofas, wardrobes, beds and appliances against the tightest point. Send photos if dismantling may be necessary.

One person can suit a small accessible move. Stairs, heavy appliances and long carries often make two people safer and faster. Flag pianos, safes, stone and large glass before booking.

Give a complete moving brief

List furniture, appliances and approximate boxes, including lofts, sheds, garages and storage units. Seal boxes so they stack and label each one by destination room.

Send both postcodes, floor levels, parking details and access photos for a realistic estimate. Call 01749 579 975 to discuss a move in Wells or the Mendips.
